Random Thoughts on Representative Democracy

I wonder if any Member of Congress, Representative or Senator, remembers why he or she is there. With the election over, all of the Representatives and a third of the Senators are already out raising funds for the next election. There is just no rest for the wicked.

Congress has saddled the American tax payer with a monumental load of debt. The Republicans don’t want you to remember how they ran up the debt with wars in Iraq and Afghanistan at a cost of about one Trillion dollars (and a lot of American lives) and they tried to convince you it was a good thing. It was a massive give away program for America’s defense industry. Then the Democrats gave away a trillion or so to Americas banks and auto industries and tried to convince you it was a good thing. And then the Democrats committed suicide and passed an outlandish health care bill with no thought to how it would be paid for.

United Corporations of America

The January 2010 ruling by the Supreme Court granting First Amendment rights to corporations is another major step in the incorporation of America. It brings to the forefront the entire subject of “Corporate Personhood”. Not being schooled in the Law, I have no definitive remark to make on the subject but do not hesitate to offer an opinion.

Income Reassignment – Feels Like Socialism

This latest health care nightmare from Washington is beginning to look more and more like income reassignment to me. No one has explained this bill (actually 2 bills) but it would seem that the government is demanding that everyone have health insurance and those that have “too much” (as defined by Washington) will help pay for those that have none by being taxed on those “excessive” benefits. I wonder if that includes members of Congress who have some of the best benefits in town?

Add to that the decrease in government support for Medicare Advantage Plans. Many of these plans were perfect for seniors on a small, fixed income and basically combined Medicare Parts B and D into an affordable package. As government support decreases, senior expense increases. Of course, our masters in Congress will not call this a tax, merely an expense.

How will this affect state Medicaid programs and are there provisions that will affect the Federal Medicare program?

It would be nice if someone would interpret these new laws for ordinary people so that we can understand how this will affect us at all stages of life. Is this in fact more debt that my great grandchildren’s great grandchildren will have to pay for.

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s campaign for a third term — totals $109.2 million

Having convinced the New York City Council to spit in the face of the public and overturn the Term Limit Law so that he could run for a third term, the multi-billionaire then proceeded to buy the office at a cost of $186 (of his own money) per vote received. His opponent, Bill Thompson spent $17 per vote received and was beaten by less than 5% points. I guess you could call this the best government money can buy.

Keep your eye on Meg Williams from eBay out in California, she is willing to spend $150 million of her own money to buy the governorship of that state.

I guess politics is in the career path of the rich now.

Where Did My Country Go?

I woke up one morning and realized that the America I grew up and lived in for over 65 years is not the America I live in today. I’m too old to move. I’m too fervent in my beliefs and disbeliefs  to accept what passes for a new and better way.

I still believe in Democracy and Capitalism but also believe that both impose responsibilities and obligations on all the participants. I also believe in “government of the people, by the people, for the people” is more than political rhetoric and needs to be restored.

I am also a firm believer in “That government is best which governs least” and The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.”

I can’t change anything but I sure as hell can document what is being done to us.
